Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ)

About Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ)

TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint which is the joint that connects to the upper and lower teeth, allowing the jaw to open, close, and move chew food. TMJ disorder includes a number of symptoms associated with the wrong positioning and dysfunction of the joints and neighbouring muscles. Some signs that you might have TMJ disorder include:

  • Misaligned bite
  • The constant need to grind your teeth
  • Pain in the ear, jaw or mouth

At Avoca Beach Dental, we focus on conducting a detailed assessment to identify the cause of the problem before undertaking any treatment. Our treatment focuses on returning the joints and discs to a centred, balanced position, relaxing the muscles and ensuring the teeth support the relaxed neuromuscular position of muscles and joints. Depending on the problem some of our techniques include:

  • Occlusal equilibration
  • Occlusal overlays
  • Orthodontics
  • Dental crowns and bridges
